One phone-call changed our lives forever. |
 The phone rang as I walked into our house after a busy day of working in the ENT specialist rooms.It was the day before the schools re-opened after the long December holidays. I dropped Carla off at a local shopping mall during my lunch break to buy her necessary school stationery. A strange, anxious voice was on the other end of the line. An unknown girl told me that she feels an urgency to contact me and to do something that “they" never do. (This phone call was the first of many times God would use people to intervene in our lives). Carla would never, ever lie to me.
I decided to pick Carla up earlier than the time we decided on. I waited, not expecting anything funny. The next moment Carla came walking from the opposite direction where I was supposed to meet her.
She looked very surprised when she saw me, and then suddenly she seemed in full control of the situation. In fact, now that I think back, she looked very relaxed. Like she was half-prepared for whatever. I did not know that she was full of Heroin at the time.
Of course I asked her where she was. She had the correct answer ready. A friend's mom took them for coffee. She can get the mum on the phone to confirm! I asked her about the strange phone call. She laughed it off by saying she knows the girl who made the call. The girl is very jealous of her, Carla and is trying to make her life miserable. She suggested that we go to the girl there and then to sort out the “false" accusations.  I did not know that Carla was using her newly developed drug-defense technique on me.
I decided to not phone the friend's mother, neither to speak to the “mean" girl. I wonder what Carla would have done if I was awake and followed her advice. ... I was fast asleep. I was secure in the fact that I raised Carla well. That I ploughed Christian values into her all the years of her life. I couldn't wait to get home to watch my favourite Soapies, while my child was busy walking into Satan's death trap that would brainwash her mind forever. When we got to the drug rehab centre, I remember looking at all the broken people sitting outside in the sun. To me, they looked rugged, terrible, and dangerous. Emotionless, empty eyes staring at me. All ages from 18 – 72 years. I was so scared, so afraid of what some of them might do to my baby-girl.
